Situated within the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, a designated World Heritage Site, this sanctuary provides a haven for the monarch butterfly population during their over-wintering period. Nestled in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt pine-oak forests ecoregion, just 100 km (62 miles) northwest of Mexico City, the reserve showcases the delicate balance between nature and conservation.

During your visit, you'll witness millions of butterflies that flock to the sanctuary annually. These enchanting creatures occupy only a fraction of the reserve's vast 56,000 hectares from October to March. The biosphere's mission extends beyond protecting the butterfly species; it also strives to preserve their precious habitat.

Important Information:

• To reach the heart of the butterfly colony, be prepared for a steep uphill walk lasting approximately 1.5 hours. The location of the colony changes nightly as the butterflies seek optimal conditions for survival. The trail will take you to an elevation of 3000 to 3500 meters (9800 to 11450 feet), but we will take it easy to acclimate to the altitude.

• Please come wearing comfortable walking shoes and layered warm clothing. Bring along sweet and salty snacks as well as water to keep yourself energized during the excursion.

This tour also offers the opportunity to explore the beautiful State of Mexico.
