Always been a language enthusiast. Raised bilingual (native English + Spanish) in Alabama-Louisiana, then picked up French + Portuguese (Brazil) living overseas with my expatriate parents. Yes, I am a ”third culture kid” of expatriate parents. I was exposed to Afrikaans for a short time at age 17-18, and truly enjoyed that, which attracts me still to Afrikaans itself, plus ”Nederlands” itself.
German: Possibly my favorite language for its clarity and consistent spelling. Started learning (part time) alone (alein ! zu Hause !) 8 years ago, and I seem to test at about 2.5 / 5.0 online, while I can follow many Germans in conversation at moderate speed, but get lost with fast or slang speakers.
