In Turkish: does the subject have to be always expressed

It's like Latin languages. You can express the subject with the conjugation of the verb (except the passive voice). Using the subject is usually for emphasising the subject or clarifying the third person (singular or plural) in the context if needed. Otherwise you don't need.

No, it is not because verbs in sentences have personel suffix;
okuyor+um, okuyor+sun..etc
But if we want to underline subject then we can use subject;
You did - Sen yaptın (not anybody else)
