Terve all.
I was just wondering to myself, is Estonian a hard language? I have a passion for languages not popular with people learning and I wanted to ask your opinions about it. I know very very basic words, like hello, goodbye etc. Other than that is the pronunciation hard? the grammar? etc.

HalfASmalliApril 2014 I am interested in learning Estonian. I am from Chicago, USA. I can help with English or Spanish.
EleaneJanuary 2009 Hard: 1) a lot of cases 2) a lot of exceptions in grammar rules 3) many words mean several different things (for example, "ime" can mean both suck! and a miracle and there are a lot of words like this). Easy: 1) no different voiceless phonemes (for example th in English) 2) you can speak it the way it's written 3) no prepositions 4) it's interesting and if you have motivation you will learn it quickly:D Good luck with your studies:) |

TriinuOctober 2008 Hey ) Estonian. Hm.. people have said, that it is hard language. But estonians don't speak very good estonian. I mean, that what we study in school, a lot of people don't remember things about estonian grammary. So, you don't need to speak estonian very good, it's enough, if you speak only good. But if someone needs help, I'm ready to help :)   Triin. |
alibaba40internautesAugust 2008 i started leaning estonian with a book and 2 CDs that i put on mp3. i started about 3 months for 20mn when i am on the train to my office. I still can't understand when i listen to dialog but i can catch some words.. the most dificult is to start "thinking estonian" not translating. At least prononciating seems to be easier and its very close to finish. Tsau |
kalev7August 2008 Tere! Well, it's not very hard language. But there are different opinions about this.I'm russian and live in Estonia, in Ida-Virumaa, where 85% can speak in russian and basicly in estonian, and for us estonian is a really hard do learn cuz noone wants to talk in estonian. If you have a friend who can speak estonian it's great cuz you will learn it in a few months, as for a self-learning it's really hard... espcially estonian cases... |
