when i used some translation tools, i found out that до этого means "before that" and раньше means "before". so i have 2 "before"s in the same sentence.
is there some kind of phrase that uses both words?
by the way the whole sentence is: почему я раньше до этого не додумался? but the rest is clear to me.
thanks in advance.

blueoysterMay 2016 I would say - sometime earlier before what,,,,,, |
KlokApril 2016 In this case "до этого" means "to this" as object and not "before then" as period in time. "Why i haven't realised this before". |
KlokApril 2016 All the problem is in "додуматься" i guess. "To realise" is the moment: you don't know smth before and you know it after. It's like "понять". "Додуматься" is the moment AND all the process of thinking before that moment. So you "понимаешь" a thing but "додумываешься" to a thing.
KlokApril 2016 In your case - no. In general - maybe. "До" in your case is not "prior", not time or order. It's "to": "дойти до дома" = "get to home".
vertex1April 2016 so "раньше до этого" means "prior to this"?
VitaliyMalyuginApril 2016 There is a missed word in this shorted colloqual sentence "почему я раньше до этого"(открытия) не додумался?" - "why I have not realised (this) before?" , here "дойти до.. " means "to guess, to consider". There is no need to look for much sense in language figures of speech. |
vertex1April 2016 thnx. so how would you rephrase it to make sense?
