On this topic they have written thousand of essays, but as nobody was there to listen to them, nobody knows. Generally, you'll be tought to pronounce "ch" in neolatin-speaking countries, such as France or Italy, and "k" in anglosaxon-speaking countries, such as Germany and Britain. Actually, some clues may be telling that they pronounced "k" (for example they wrote "ciccirici" meaning the cock's cry, which in italian is "chicchirichi"), yet in italian we pronounce "ch" in the words that derive from latin "ci" and "ce".
