Why we say "Ditemi se vi serve qualcosa" and not " ...se vi servo qualcosa"?

"Ditemi se vi serve qualcosa" means "tell me if you need something", while "ditemi se vi servo A qualcosa" ("ditemi se posso esservi d'aiuto" sounds better) means "tell me if I can help you out".
Basically they're the same thing but the first one is used informally, while the second one is used in a formal way (like a shop girl or a bartender)!
