It depends to the context.
If you want to express that you wish somebody the best and think about him so that everything will go well (e.g. an exam) you have to use "jemandem die Daumen drücken".

If you want to "root for a team" you should use "ein Team anfeuern".

And at least if you mean "to root for sth" the German expression is "nach etwas wühlen"
