Vastake - Français

In french and in italian, to miss is not a trasitive verb. The subject of the verb is the object in the english form. Just like with the verb to like.
e.g: english: I like pizza
italian: Pizza(subject) piace a me (dative)
Same thing with the verb to miss:
e.g: english: I(subject) miss my cat(object)
french: mon chat(subject) me (= à moi, dative) manque
Tegarding the verb to hate (dester), nothing changes

The first reason i can give you is that you cannot translate french litterally to english. It is the same thing for english. If i take for example "I miss you" litterally in french means "Je manque toi" and "I love you"= Je aime toi. You have to consider that little differencies.
