Why would a Finnish immigrant want to learn French in the United States?

My neighbor Yumiko (yes, real name, she is of Japanese descent) is too embarrased to learn English, mainly because of stereotypes. Also, her friend Kira is also a Finnish immigrant, and she too wants to jump on the French bandwagon.
