SkyelightFebruary 2014 Good question, and there are different responses. 1/ The accents; there are usually 3 distinct accents recognised in 'American' English (most people understand 'general American), whereas in Britain its estimated there are as many as 200- and sometimes people who are familiar with one accent cannot understand-or be understood- by those familiar in another accent! (so it's crucial to know them!). 2/ Vocabulary- it's estimated that, since the war of American Independence in the late 18th century to today, 'American' English has now established 6,000 words that are of American origin and cannot necessarily be understood or- more likely- is less used by British. Example; In Britain we ar efar more likely to say 'rubbish' to designate waste, whereas Americans tend to use 'garbage'. Hope that helps a little |
