I always recommend books that are around a middle school or high school reading level. Roald Dalh, Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Narnia, Anne of Green Gables, Coraline, The Secret Garden, anything that would be written by the ”Children’s Classic” Penguin Publishers series. Good stories that are fun to read as an adult, but have simplified language structure and intentional storytelling pieces to bring younger audiences along which make following the language a lot easier.

I have a little English library and time for reading. There are many audio books on the Internet. I listened to Charles Dickens’ books until I was able to understand the language plainly without translation. It brought results. That is my own experience of learning English

Charles Dickens, unless it has been adapted to modern English, is not a good choice for learners in my opinion.

There is too much archaic language and many grammatical features which are no longer used or, at best, used in highly formal contexts.

Unless your level is getting towards a higher C1 - at which point you can begin to handle English dialects comfortably - then better not to go into 19th century English literature in general.

What is your language level? What things do you like to read? Do you like fiction or non-fiction? What types of fiction? What types of non-fiction?
