Both are potentially correct - but each has a different meaning.

”begin a debt free year” = the start of a year when you have no debt and you maintain this during that whole year.

”begin a year debt free” = at the start of the year you have no debt. However, it says nothing about whether you have debt during the year or not.

Note that most people would write "debt free" as "debt-free" since it is normally used as a compound adjective because of the single concept of "being free of debt".

If that is the case, you are debt-free until the Christmas bill arrives sometime in January or February.

So, the second one might be what you need here! You start the year without debt - ”begin a year debt free” - then the Christmas bill arrives and then you have a debt (hopefully not a bit one!).
