To Give up, means to quit, as if you are doing some kind of hard work and you think you can´t do it, you give up/you quit. Abandon means to leave someone or something behind you. If you leave your dog on the street and never go back for it, you are abandoning the dog.

One could give up hope, which is to say, "abandon" hope. I would still look to alecoiba's comment as an answer to your question.
