Leeway is mainly used as an abstract concept in modern English meaning (figuratively) flexibility, space, or room in which to act.
I could say, "my boss is leaving me a lot of leeway on this project." This means that my boss is giving me a lot of freedom to make my own decisions about how to approach and solve the problem.
I could also say, "once our plane lands we have an hour's leeway to catch the next flight." This means that our layover gives us an hour of free time for us to choose what to do with.
Also, in English we never use the article "a" with leeway. You can have an amount of leeway or simply you can have leeway to do something ("The bonus that came with my new job gives me a lot of financial leeway this month."). You might also ask for the leeway you need for something ("Please grant me the leeway to do that my way.").
