I heard in the conversation which somebody doorbelled and said " It's me. Should I come up?"
I'm confused with the usage of this structure. I don't really understand why we use "should" here? Is there anyone who can help me?
I need a native speaker to answer.
thanks in advance

![]() | catalina_sJuly 2017 It can be a way to make sure that you are not bothering the person who is already up there so it is like asking for permission. There can be another meaning , for example if you know that the person who is up is packing you can ask "Should I come up?'" as in "should I come up and help you or can you come down by yourself?" |
arash1rJuly 2017 Thank you catalina_s, it sounds sensible. I appreciate your concern and fruitful comment.

arash1rJuly 2017 Thank you, but I don't think in this way. In contrast to what you said what we say here is that we just ask a permission to enter the building. We have stayed outside while we are saying this sentence.
