How to choose between "past perfect", "present perfect" or "simple past"?

- Past perfect tense : "I had already eaten when she came"

It happened before another action in the past.

 

- Present perfect tense :

1. "I watched TV yesterday" at a specific time in the past

2. the Present perfect tense indicates too that the action extends to the present: «I have played basketball two hours already [and I'm still playing]»

 

- Simple past tense  : "I have watched TV"

at an unknown time in the past
