I was doing an English test an one of the questions was :” if I ... Going to enter the competition, I should have done it now” the correct answer was "were" but I don't understand why it's not "was"

You know , 'were' is used in place of 'was' when we are saying something we only expect to do but they are not possible in reality.
eg:-If I were the president of USA...
Same here ,you are not actually participating in the competition but you are speaking your thoughts on what you would have done if you were participating for real .

You know, we often can see 'were' instead of 'was' in the condition sentences. My teacher says it is for being more conditional
