b1llybobApril 2016 I am unsure of the actual intent (insufficient context), but the sentence could be phrased as:
Believing it to be cheaper, we went by bus. Believing it to be cheap, we went by bus. We went by bus, as we believed it to be cheaper, (or: "cheap") We went by bus, as we thought it would be cheaper,
etc. Although it may seem strange to use the verb "to take", when using, or travelling by, a bus (or other transport), it is common usage to say something like: We took the bus, as we thought it would be cheaper.
ps, an older style (not quite "archaic", but a little clumsier in modern English), of phrasing could also be: Believing it cheaper, we went by bus.
