Could someone explain to me what the difference is between "I have eaten dinner" and "I ate dinner"?

First, they are 2 different forms of the past tense. "I ate dinner" is the past imperfect, and "I have eaten dinner" is the past perfect. You might say, "I have eaten dinner already," if someone asks if you want to get a bite to eat. You might say "I ate dinner an hour ago", if your mother asks whether you have eaten yet.

    So you use the past perfect just when the time is already mentioned, right? For Example: "I have called you yesterday at 7:00 am". thank you
