Pygmalion: the myth and the play
- "Pygmalion", the Bernard Shaw's play tells the story of a profesor of phonetics Henry Higgins who try to change a poor young woman florist Eliza Doolittle, in a distinguished lady of the high society.
- The title is tired of the myth of Pygmalion, the sculptor of Cyprus.
- Indeed, we can observe many common points betwenn the myth and the play, that is explain the name of the piece.
- Pygmalion and the profesor Higgins are two men who try and arrive to reach their ideal woman.
- Higgins like a sculptor have "sculpted" Eliza with his lessons of behavior.
- And they share the same arrogance, and the same opinion about women.
- They hates women.
- The only diference is that Higgins and Eliza do not fall in love, they are just friend in the end of the play.
- Bernard Shaw has wanted create a parallel between his story and the myth to criticize inequality between differents social categories.
