  • The Most North Tea

    • During my trip to Russian south I visited the most north tea plantations in the world.
    • They are located in Greater Sochi area.
    • To grow tea in Russia has been tried since 1878.
    • But capricious bushes, which successfully were grown in Georgia refused to grow in Sochi.
    • Agronomists and botanists have already pronounced their verdict that tea can’t grow north of Sukhumi.
    • But just then an usual worker I.A.Koshman laid out his tea plantations.
    • It was in 1905 and 5 years later he started to participate in exhibitions and fairs and develop trade.
    • After the World War 2 growing tea in Russia acquires industrial scale.
    • Matsesta tea plantations founded in 1947.
    • Now its square is 170 hectares.
  • Tea leaf harvesting occurs from May to October.
  • The interval between cutting is 7-14 days.
  • There are two collection methods - manual and mechanical.
    • The manual method is more gentle and better quality, after it leaves grow back faster, but obviously it’s more labor-intensive process.
  • In November tea bushes bloom.
  • They say it’s very beautiful.
    • Unfortunately I didn’t saw neither blooming nor leaf collection, as I visited the plantation in March, but even now slender rows of bright green tea bushes look amazing.
