  • Interview with Daurian shaman Meng Jinfeng (Northeast China, 2021 year expedition) Abstract This article is a recording of an interview with the Daurian shaman Meng Jinfeng (孟金凤) living in Northeast China.
  • The interview took place during the author’s expedition along the eastern slopes of the Greater Khingan, near the village of Dular (杜拉尔村) in the Dular Ewenki Ethnic Township (杜拉尔鄂温克民族乡) in July 2021.
    • The text version of the interview, translated from Chinese into Russian, was almost not subject to abbreviations; the author tried, if possible, to preserve the informant’s speech style.
    • To provide the base for further research, the author preserved in their original form all the passages and phrases of the informant that were incomprehensible from the conversation and literature itself.
    • The content of the conversation concerned mainly which of the locally known spirits Meng Jinfeng turns to during rituals, as well as the very process of instilling spirits in the shaman and the sacrifices accompanying the treatment of the sick.
    • In addition, questions were asked about the creation of barkens (usually hidden by the Evenks and Daurs, placings of spirits that are creating by shamans in the process of treating diseases).
    • Also, during the conversation, a lot of attention was paid to questions about the becoming of a shaman and the problems associated with it.
    • Among other things, from the interview reader can get certain information about the social status of Daurian shamans, the connections of some elements of shamanism with the clan organization, etc. For a better understanding of the recorded conversation, the article is provided with a short introduction and explanation of the general features of Daurian magic.
  • The text has been supplemented with author’s notes on religion, the nuances of the Chinese language and other details, without which many parts of the text could only be understood by specialists in the ethnography of Northeast China.
    • Some details of the conversation that may seem strange to the reader are originated from the fact that the purpose of the expedition was to explore the religious system of the Evenks, and the interview with Meng Jinfeng took place almost by accident.
  • Key words: Daurs, Bainacha, Saint Fox, barken, Tengri, shamanism
