    • Stay in education or go straight to work: a report

    • The purpose of this report is to evaluate the situation regarding young people in their decision to stay in education or go straight to work in my country as well as factors that affect this decision, how much has the proportion of young people to go straight into work changed and how the developments in society have influenced this change.
    • First of all, the vast majority of people in my country nowadays decide to continue studying rather than start working after finishing high school.
    • The reason for that is that people search for better working conditions, having academic training does not ensure you will find a job but it does give you the opportunity to be a suitable applicant for a certain job post that requires new recruits to have a diploma.
  • However, this has not always been the predominant trend among young people.
  • Sixty years ago, most of them, including my own parents, had to take the difficult decision of prioritizing their families’ wellbeing rather than pursuing their own personal ambitions.
  • Back then, families were very humble and the offspring were forced to work to provide for them as much as they could.
  • Only those in privileged positions could get into higher education institutions and continue their studies.
    • Nevertheless, thousands of job posts where vacant in detriment of the country’s economy.
  • The government became aware of the situation and introduced a new state policy in order to stimulate the economy.
    • For example, students with a poor background would receive a full scholarship for the whole of their bachelor’s degree, as long as they passed they didn’t fail any subject.
    • In conclusion, while back in the days young people used to go straight to work, not exactly because they choose to, but because they needed to in order to survive, now the positive trend for late teens is to stay in education.
