    • The Great Expectations

    • I promised myself that I would do something for them one of these days, and formed a plan in outline for bestowing a dinner of roast-beef and plumpudding, a pint of ale, and a gallon of condescension, upon everybody in the village.
  • (p.208) This fragment shows us the beginning of change in Pip`s behavior.
  • Pip seems quite happy after he inherits some money.
  • He wants to raise his social status.
  • Therefore, he wants to throw a good dinner for the villagers.
  • These words show that he becomes reckless and doesn’t value money like before.
    • Though he comes from a poor background, he starts to pretend like a rich person.
    • As we can see he does not treat his neighbors as equals to him.
  • From my point of view this relationship isn`t right.
    • But here we can observe evil influence of money.
  • Pip begins to change in a bad way.
    • All other swindlers upon earth are nothing to the self-swindlers, and with such pretences did I cheat myself.
  • (p.318) After changing of his social position Pip also began to change his way of thinking.
  • He became craftier with other people.
    • This is shown through manner in which he behaves himself with people from different social strata – Joe and Miss Havisham.
    • At the same time, he began to deceive himself too.
    • And judging himself from the future he comes to conclusion that self-deception is the worst kind of lie.
  • I totally agree with these words.
    • Self-deception is really immoral thing because it doesn`t allow you to realize what is true and what is not.
  • Beyond that, it`s really hard to get rid from it because it`s difficult to admit that to yourself.
  • ‘Love her, love her, love her!
  • If she favours you, love her.
  • If she wounds you, love her.
    • If she tears your heart to pieces - and as it gets older and stronger, it will tear deeper - love her, love her, love her!’ (p.338) I paid attention to this quote because it can show us sickly inner world of Miss Havisham.
  • According to the book she uses Estella as a tool for revenge.
  • Miss Havisham lures and urges Pip to love Estella no matter what so that her revenge can be fulfilled.
  • She knows how much Pip loved Estella and she wants his heart to be broken by her.
  • I found this fragment interesting because I like psychological descriptions of characters.
  • This allow us to understand the motivation of personage.
  • In this case we are dealing with the story of old and sick women.
  • And it`s a vivid illustration of how far can revenge go.
  • You should know...
  • I am what you have made me.
  • (p.431) This was said by Estella to Miss Havisham during an argument.
    • She was taught by Miss Havisham only to break someone`s hearts and lives.
    • And this awful skill eventually is used in relation of all people around her.
  • Estella blames Miss Havisham for the way she has brought her up.
  • This quote drew my attention because it exemplifies how much in our life depends on proper education.
  • We have problems in relationships with people around us during all life because of mistakes in our upbringing.
  • Sometimes, these problems transform into this terrible forms as is the case with Estella.
  • When I had spoken to Biddy, as I thought it not a time for talking I went and sat down near Joe, and there began to wonder in what part of the house it - she - my sister - was.
    • (p.396) This fragment seemed interesting to me because it exactly demonstrates what people usually feels when they face with death.
    • In my opinion, Pip`s confusion which is expressed in the way how he calls his sister (it – she – my sister) is our typical reaction on it.
  • Firstly, we avoid giving the deceased any characteristics of living people.
  • Then we realize that the deceased was a man.
  • At the end we admit the fact that the man that we used to know is dead.
  • This small detail seemed to me a good illustration of human feelings.
    • It once again shows us how expressive was language of Charles Dickens.
  • So, throughout life, our worst weaknesses and meannesses are usually committed for the sake of the people whom we most despise.
  • (p.308) From my point of view, this statement reflects the real situation.
  • Actually, people are social creatures.
    • That`s why we behave themselves in accordance with norms of their social groups.
  • Approval or disapproval of group members occupies an important place in our life.
  • But sometimes we pay too much attention to what people think about us or our actions.
  • Especially this situation takes place if we are dealing with «the people whom we most despise».
  • To be honest, I can`t really say why people do it.
    • In my opinion we should seek the roots of this phenomenon in our «animal instincts».
  • We are subconsciously drawn to the strong person.
    • But the problem is that «bad» does not necessarily mean «strong».
    • Who brought you up by hand?
    • (p.11) Mrs. Joe often says the process of Joe`s upbringing in this way.
  • From my point of view, this statement is fundamentally wrong.
    • A lot of different important things depends on our education.
    • But we also should take into account that every man is a person and every man develops in his
