  • High Bridge Caretaker’s House

  • In this pandemic period my city is experiencing a real tourist boom.
    • Tourists are attracted by uncommon of our region, although it is still usual post-soviet city with its ugly ”khrushchevki” (panel or brick 5-storey houses Khrushchev’s period with small apartments), but East Prussian past makes its deal, moreover the Baltic Sea also attracts people.
    • So even my mother, who do not recognize domestic tourism have visited me already twice.
    • During her recent visit I opened lots of new interesting places.
    • I find it useful to look sometimes at our cities through the eyes of tourists.
    • There is always something interesting, somewhere more, somewhere less, but still.
    • On the card is one of such places.
    • It’s High bridge caretaker’s house.
  • This building really looks nice and eye-catching.
    • In the end of XIX century in Konigsberg were rebuild the High Bridge.
  • Lifting mechanisms were placed on one of the bridge supports.
    • But it turned uncomfortable for its service, so in 1899 near were built a small building for hydraulic accumulators, pumps and motors.
  • The neo-gothic building with a turret looked more like a small castle.
    • It went through the World War II intact, but then it stood empty.
    • Just in this year there were open some kind of a museum.
    • There is a free exposition of old Konigsberg’s postcards (about 650 cards, the oldest dated 1871).
    • You also can drink coffee with marzipan or buy postcards by Kaliningrad’s artists (what I actually did).
  • The owner has had big plans for its development.
    • For example, they want to organize master classes in drawing or to release company postage stamp.
    • According to him, investments to the museum can pay off after many years, but commerce isn’t the main.
    • The man just loves his hometown and wants to participate in its improving.
    • I, in turn, happy that someone finally has care about the caretaker’s house and breathes life into it.
    • So many times I went past this tiny castle and so great that now I can get inside and enjoy its atmosphere.
