Today’s youth
- In recent years, there has been concern that youth attitudes have changed as living standards have risen and that young people have become less empathetic.
- But is this true?
- It cannot be denied that our world is quite different than before.
- Though it is true that the new technologies and ways of communication play an important role, one should bear in mind that a lot of people needs help so much as before or even more.
- What is particularly noticeable is that young people are self-centred.
- As a result of this, the “Me”-generation had sometimes no empathy.
- Their lives goes only around themselves: their virtual profiles, their virtual friends and photos and videos for them.
- The media is also everywhere and is never enough.
- Young people need constant stimulation and this factor could be account for the obsession with material possessions.
- It’s difficult to accept the idea that both are new characteristics for young people.
- But we cannot forget that the parents from the last century had already complained about the same topics.
- On the other hand it is important to think about how many people volunteer a year in their country or another, only to help people with problems: ill people, old people or kids.
- It seems to me that young people are probably much the same as they have always been.
- Only the perception of it seems to have changed.
