The human brain and its care

• The human brain is the central organ of the human nervous system, and it controls most of the activities of the body, processing, integrating, and coordinating the information it receives from the sense organs, and making decisions as to the instructions sent to the rest of the body.

• Brain activity is made possible by the interconnections of neurons, the cells of the brain, thanks to: neural pathways, neural circuits and elaborate network systems.

• We have more than 86 billion neurons in the our brain and the whole circuitry is driven by the process of neurotransmission.

• At the same time, ageing causes changes to the brain size, vasculature, and cognition.

• A healthy life both physically and mentally may be the best defence against the changes and protective factors that reduce: cardiovascular risk, namely regular exercise, a healthy diet, and low to moderate alcohol intake.

• But, when the brain is damaged, it can affect many different disorders include any conditions or disabilities that affect our brain, such as Parkinson’s disease, dementias including Alzheimer’s disease, and multiple sclerosis.

• Neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, cause our grand parents’ brain and nerves to deteriorate over time.

• They can change their personality and cause confusion.

• They can also destroy their brain’s tissue and nerves.

• These new Alzheimer’s treatments could stop or significantly delay the progression of the disease.
