  • The discovery of penicillin

  • 80 years ago, the first naturally occurring antibiotic drug discovered and used therapeutically.
  • It all started when Alexander Fleming (Picture next slide) was experimenting with Staphylococcus aerus and left it on the on the culture plate and went on holidays. when he finally came back he saw that the culture plate was contaminated with a fungus and the Staphylococcus on the plate died instead of just throwing it away he stopped to think why it died, he eventually figuered out that was because of the fungus and he finally could grow that fungus on his own he tought if the fungus could kill the bacteria on the plate why not on people?
  • And he was right, so he started making mold juice and renaming it to penicillin saving millions lives.
  • ------ Alexander Fleming as an Ex WW1 soldier he understood that many of the casualties where form infections due to bacteria, it was understandable because many soldiers used to stay almost entire weeks on trenchs full of wáter filled with dirt, blood, body parts or even corpses so Sir Fleming tried to make as much as possible before D-Day(The Normandy landings) as a result of his hard work Penicillin is credited whit saving lifes up to 10-15% of all WW2 casualties on his own. in the next slide you’ll see some propaganda used to promote the donation of penicillin with the slogan ‘’Give this job Everthing you’ve got’’.
