  • Extract From My Interview

    • Oxana So how the process of media research is going on?
    • Do you look it up in social media, like Vkontakte, or at some archives, that are difficult to find?
    • Anton I use everything I can find, including Vkontakte, though somebody will find this unpleasing.
    • I intrigued not only by media but also so-called “marginal art”, particularly in Lugansk and Donetsk.
    • Vkontakte you can find archives, newspaper clippings, photos taken at parties and exhibition openings - all this left only there, unfortunately.
    • Also usually I find something interesting on YouTube.
    • This kind of process occurs partially because of lack of money for research.
    • Of course, I would be glad to come by at local media archive of some television company to hunt something, in Kharkov, for instance.
    • Though, I think there is total chaos, as well, but I would try to extract some shootings, reportages from cultural events.
    • But this process needs time and money.
  • That’s why this kind of research is quite fragmented.
    • At this moment we don’t have ongoing professional base.
    • Oxana And what reason to create media art in the first place?
  • Why do you use generative programs and technological art instead of traditional forms such as pictorial art and sculpture?
  • Is this an outdated practice in your opinion?
    • Anton Few years ago I was more sceptical about traditional mediums, but gradually I became more loyal of them, especially lately.
    • I think today with such wide spread of digital technologies every artist already use it.
    • And when it comes to media art in its most hardcore display, so to speak - generative or algorithmic media art, many problems are remain to be solved.
    • One of the most important is when medium starts to speak for itself, and artist gets caught with sound and visual style over substance.
  • It’s one of the most serious faults of technology.
    • Everybody knows how easy to find yourself sucked into gadgets, internet is a clear example for this as a device for procrastination. While surfing in technology can lead you to not only the loss of original idea but you can get carried away by completely different concept, so you stuck somewhere else.
    • We can imagine generative and algorithmic art as continuation of avant garde project, that was founded by futurists in 1920s.
    • And other movements , such as suprematismus, conceptualism, american minimalism of 60’s (which I am fond of) had progressively reborning within art history.
    • After growing criticism of postmodernism (witch now have been rethinked too) its became harder and harder for this kind of art to find its place.
    • After all this traditional art is to some degree conservative.
    • Somebody even used as example of acrylic pictorial art .
    • Technically it’s a new media because acrylic paint was founded later then video.
  • However I want to rethink old mediums with the touch of digital.
