  • All that is small is not nano

  • The article touches upon the discussion whether term “nanoparticles” needs to be redefined.
  • To begin with, recent idea of developing of nanoparticles classification that is based on the novel properties rather than their small size alone is suggested.
  • Then, the absence of specific regulations of the safe use of nanoparticles is emphasized.
  • In addition, a review published in Nature Nanotechnology is mentioned and the necessity of more rigorous approach to the classification is pointed out.
  • Furthermore, Mark Wiesner, lead researcher of Duke University, US, is quoted and his idea that term “nanoparticles” shall be used for those having novel properties is put forward.
  • Additionally, the question of nanoparticles taxonomy is raised.
  • Subsequently, the dependence between some physicochemical characteristics of nanoparticles, for example, their reactivity, and sized-dependent changes is considered as a useful tool for formation of the basis for new taxonomy.
  • Furthermore, Wiesner’s assumption that hazardous nanoparticles might be found at the lower end of nano spectrum, i.e. below 30 nm, is mentioned.
  • At the same time, the statement of the author of one more recent review of nanoparticle safety, Ken Donaldson, is cited as an example of an opposite opinion and the absence of any proven consequence of aforementioned sized-dependent changes is underlined.
  • As the result, the restriction for definition is questioned.
  • Moreover, another expert’s considerations about possible termination of regulation of nanoparticles above 30 nm, posed by Wiesner’s restriction are provided.
  • Finally, Mark Wiesner’s comments about only recommendatory character of suggested limit is considered and his assumption that described categorization scheme might be relevant for developing of nanoparticles regulation is presented.
  • To summarize, the approach to the classification of nanoparticles based on their size-dependent properties is discussed from the different points of view.
