    • The story is set during the late he late 19th century, where Jacob,a widowed farmer who lives with his 2 children in Kansas,is still sad by the death of his wife during childbirth several years before.
    • Caleb, the youngest of the family,is the most affected by this loss. Her mother died the day after she gave birth to him,but he doesn't know that.
    • The only thing he knows is that her mom used to sing, and so used to Jacob, his father.
    • He spents the days asking her older sister Anna about their mother: how did she looked like and if she sang every day.
    • One time,Anna broke in tears when Caleb asked her to sing one of her songs,so that he might remember her.
    • Jacob, realizing that he cannot raise his children on his own anymore, decides to put an ad in the paper, asking for a wife.
    • A couple of days later, someone writes back.Sarah Wheaton, from Maine, answers his ad and travels to Kansas to become his wife.
    • The first thing that Caleb asks Sarah whe they first meet is: "Do you sing?" She says yes,and that puts a smile in the face of Caleb.
    • Sarah brings some souvenirs from the sea,and they explain to her the daily tasks of the farm during her stay.
    • After one month, she admits that while she misses the sea, she would miss them more if she left them.
