  • On Monday November 20th, 2017, the international community and especially African countries celebrated the “Africa Industrialization Day (AID)”.
  • This year’s event was under the theme “African Industrial Development: A Pre-Condition for an Effective and Sustainable Continental Free Trade Area (CFTA).” Why Africa Industrialization Day?
  • How a continental Free Trade Area can help Africa get industrialized?
  • In 1989, the General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed 20 November as “Africa Industrialization Day” to mobilize commitment from the international community to the industrialization of Africa.
  • Since then, UNIDO, (United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in collaboration with the Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA) and the Office of the Permanent Observer of the African Union to the United Nations (AU) have been leading this celebration.
  • An event to raise awareness and stir up all country to get involved in Africa’s industrialization.
  • Indeed, over half (54%) of African’s population leaves under 1.25 dollar a day and 34 out of 48 Least Developed Countries(LDCs) are in Africa.
  • Getting access to a good education, health care, etc. are the most common ways to get rid of poverty.
  • Nevertheless, industrialization has become the requisite mean for the takeoff of Africa.
  • Industrialization, creates jobs, increases income, enhances the value of agricultural products, causes the technic progress and gives to governments the means to eradicate poverty.
  • For instance, within five years, the growth of Turkey’s GDP was about 121% after un strong work on their industries.
  • Likewise, between 1986 and 1990, the Gross Domestic Product of Malaysia has more than doubled; result of a mass of investment in electronic sector.
