  • Health conditions in Latin America

    • Last year I've spent some time in Colombia as an exchange student.
    • I've lived there for almost half a year and this experience has changed my entire personality.
    • Within the first week I experienced such insane things which one barely can put into words.
    • On the 3rd day I was alone at home (I shared a flat with 3 fellow colombians) in my apartment in a cordoned-off area lying in a southern neighborhood of Cartagena de Indias next to the Carribean Sea.
    • It was around 9 pm and out from nowhere someone just cut electricity and women began to cry outside my window.
    • The whole 130 square meters big flat was dark, I wasn't armed and thought there was a robbery going on.
    • In the end nothing happened and current came back after a while.
  • That happened to me 3 times during my stay in the country.
    • My second unforgettable experience was a food intoxication during the first weekend.
    • Fortunately one of my flatmates was at home this time and called the ambulance which took me to a nearby hospital.
    • This was the first time where I really appreciated the european health care system since in Colombia it's still very sketchy.
    • The doctors refused to treat ma unless I handed them out some considerable amount of money.
    • The hygienic state at this place was just bad and people with serious injuries waited hours for their treatment.
    • Despite of all that, these were the most amazing 5 months of my whole life.
