  • London. Capital under Strain.

  • The chapter "GANGS" from the film “London.
    • Capital under Strain” (published in 2012) is about the rebellious youth from poor areas in London, who join gangs and make a lot of trouble.
  • London is a city of contrasts.
    • On the one hand there are very rich areas and on the other there are parts of London in which affordable housing is rare, the salaries are hardly enough to survive and crime is rampant.
  • Entire neighborhoods are dominated by gangs, with members hardly older than 16 to 20.
  • Even at such a young age many of them are recorded to the police.
  • They rarely go to school, but spend their days with alcohol, cannabis and dealing.
    • For them the gang is like family.
    • If one of them has trouble, everybody will be involved.
  • They fight for their territories, or to defend allies.
    • Sometimes they get in trouble just because they have instigated a fight for no reason.
  • The victims often have no chance.
  • They get injured or even killed.
  • The fights are unfair.
  • Most of the gangs are in the majority, so it can happen that twenty fight against two.
  • This brutality keeps the police officers in red alert, but it does not change anything about the current situation.
  • Basically, these young people are just desperate.
  • They have no future prospects.
    • They cannot escape their poverty.
  • Many do not even try to get an apprenticeship, they have simply given up.
    • In my opinion something has to change in the distribution of rich and poor.
    • Young people must be given a Perspective.
  • Otherwise, an increasing gap between the classes will be created.
