  • Why is English so important?

    • Nowadays, English is one of the most spoken languages in the world.
    • In every countries you visit, you're more or less likely to find someone who speaks English.
  • It is the international language for commerce and trade.
  • It's also fairly easy to learn (surely more than German or Italian).
  • Without a doubt, it's useful to have a common, widespread language.
  • One could say it's one of the positive effects of globalization.
    • But we shall not forget that English did not spread in a peaceful way: England has a long history of colonization, and the language was brought in foreign countries such as Kenya, Australia, India, by soldiers and conquerors and it was imposed by them to the indigenous population.
    • Moreover, we should not look at this subject with an eurocentric point of view: English is not the only widespread language in the world: nowadays languages as Arabian, Russian and Chinese are also very useful.
