  • Teenage Pregnancy and the Loss of Family Values

    • Lately, there has been a dramatic increase in the rate of teenage pregnancies.
  • Some people claim that this trend stems from the loss of family values.
  • But is that true?
    • In order to find out, we should inquire about what has caused the loss of the so-called family values: divorce, equal rights between man and woman, single motherhood, depenalization of adultery... not only those things seem like improvement in laws to me, but it's also very unlikely that those are the real causes of teenage pregnancy.
    • In my opinion, nowadays teenagers do not receive a proper sex education by their family: many parents are too embarassed to do so, or they think that by not speaking about it to their children (especially their daughters), they will not grow interested.
    • Moreover, when a teenage girl decides to become a mother at the age of eighteen, it is usually because she's not interested in carrying on her education.
  • So I guess that lack of culture and interest in school also plays an important factor.
  • Besides, there's also a growing interest towards this trend in tv: there are many programmes centered on the lives of those teenagers who become mothers while still in highschool.
  • This could be a good thing, actually, if, for example, the programmes showed the difficulty of the situation and also gave tips on how to avoid it.
