The 12 Chairs
- His desk looked like an ancient gravestone.
- Rats had destroyed its left angle.
- The shaky legs of the desk trembled under pressure of thick and heavy files.
- On Friday 15th of April in 1927 Hippolyte Matveevich, as usual, woke up at 7.30 in the morning.
- Hippolyte put on old-fashioned trousers and soft boots with a square toe.
- He removed all water drops from his head and fingered his moustache.
- Hippolyte rubbed his rough chin hesitatingly for a while, then he decided to give his oncoming mother-in-law a smile.
- «Hippolyte, I`ve had a bad dream this night. »- she said.
- She pronounced a word «dream» in a bit French way.
- Hippolyte looked down on her.
- His height was about 1,85m, so it was quite easy for him to treat her with slight disregard.
- The mother-in-law continued: «I saw dead Mary.
- I am alarmed, something bad can happen to me»She said the last words so loudly that Hippolyte`s hair rippled.
- He frowned and said: » Everything is going to be ok, mommy.
- Have you already paid for utilities?
- » It turned down that she had not paid.
- Her shoes weren`t polished.
- Hippolyte didn`t like his mother-in-law.
- She was silly and too old to have a chance to get cleverer.
