    • Taken from an Italian article

  • I admire, as the rest of the honest Italians, the difficult and dangerous job of those judges that fight against the mafia, which is also known in Italy as “Cosa Nostra” (“Our Thing”).
    • I know that there are resistance movements and initiatives against the mafia in Palermo and in the whole Sicily; but now and again I surprise myself at dreaming that maybe something else can be done.
  • I dream of a State that is able to coordinate an anti-mafia cultural offensive.
  • A State able to understand that the phenomenon of the “pentiti” was not a product of the judicial system, but the consequence of the crisis of identity of the mafia’s culture.
  • A culture which seems to have difficulty to bring itself up-to-date.
  • Maybe I am naive, but I dream of a State that knows how to use the resources that it has as a modern country, from the television to the advertising.
  • And from the school to the public information to get rid of this old problem.
  • It is a moral duty for the State to try to defeat this social cancer that has no motives to exist, the mafia.
  • I do not wish for Italy, a country already half controlled by the mafia, to be ruled in the future by the Statemen that come to terms with the members of this society.
  • Men that abuse of their power and are being manipulated by the mafia.
  • What else could they do?
