Peeling the onion, Gunter Grass. Book review.
- Gunter Grass is a well known German writer, poet, sculptor and illustrator.
- He widely regarded as Germany's most famous living writer.
- In 1999 Grass received the highest literature award: The Nobel Prize in Literature.
- The most famous writing is The Tin Drum - Grass's first novel.
- The protagonist of this novel refused to grow, and only continue it after the World War II ends.
- It was evaluated as a symbol of the nation's guilty.
- In his first novel writer reflects about his personal and collective guilty for supporting Nazi.
- The latest - memoirs novel Peeling the Onion called scandalous reaction because of describing the fact Grass served in Waffen-SS as a volunteer.
- Peeling the Onion describes a period of time from 1939 when the World War II had began to 1959 when The Tin Drum was published.
- The story describes young person who lives, like the others, in the military paradigm.
- He believed in Nazi propaganda, and thinks nothing, except thoughts about himself.
- When Gunter was 16 he decided to go to the fleet as a volunteer.
- It was a way to escape from his tiny parent's flat and realize his youth ideals.
- Аt the end of 1944 he was called to the Waffen-SS.
- Then it was american captivity, life as a refugee with his three hungries: food, sex and creativity.
- The second part of the book describes his creativity formation as a sculptor and writer, his relationships with women and his aging parents.
- To be truth, I haven't got much satisfaction reading the novel.
- The story is not perceived as an organic whole.
- There are seams between different parts, the story looks like patchwork quilt.
- Other issue, there are some parts I have read with interest, but mostly, it is too personal story of evolution writer's views, personality and the creative way.
- Perhaps it would be better if you had known the author and his creativity before reading the novel. 6,5 from 10
