    • Free Trade Agreement to help the Middle Class

  • Negotiators of the European Union and the USA want to dispel fears of lowered standards.
    • According to German Federal Minister of Economic Affairs, Sigmar Gabriel, Europe and the USA have the chance to set economical rules for the whole global economy at the controversial Free Trade Agreement.
    • “A transatlantic agreement has to set new standards for the economical globalization“, Gabriel said today, at a summit meeting in Berlin with representatives of the US-government and the European Commission.
    • He warned the negotiators to not jeopardize the agreement with secretiveness.
    • “In democracies there mustn't be any secret negotiations.“, he added.
  • Critics demanded to abandon the discussions with the Americans, because of fears about high standards, regarding consumer protection and employment rights in Europe, being lowered.
  • Gabriel rejected the demands of the critics, since those fears were unfounded.
    • According to US Trade Representative, Michael Froman, especially the middle class will benefit from the Free Trade Agreement.
  • With the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) the commitment for small or medium-sized enterprises on both sides could be doubled, Froman said in Berlin.
  • He disapproved fears about lower standards.
  • The environmental and other standards would not be lowered.
  • They are also aiming for a strong consumer protection, he added.
    • The European Union and the USA are negotiating since July, 2013, about an extensive transatlantic freedom agreement.
  • The USA is the largest outlet market of Europe, inversely, the European Countries are the most important trading partners for the United States.
