  • The other side of truth, Bervey Naidoo

  • The other side of truth is a novel about Nigerian political refugees written by Beverley Naidoo and published in 2000.
  • Though the book is written in the first person singular , the reader is immersed in a deeply moving story through the character of a young 12 year old girl : Sade Solaja .
  • His courage and his gift to imagine a lot of things to keep a minimum of hope make it a character that it is impossible not to get attached .
  • She tells her story and the reader devours .
  • She begins by talking about a painful memory , a ... or two sounds : those issued by the shots that ended the life of his mother.
  • Throughout the work, the memory haunts her thoughts and in her dreams , like her mother's voice whose words continue to impart wisdom and comfort.
  • But it remains to Sade family including his father, a man whom we can blame the death of his wife.
  • Indeed, Folarin Solaja is a journalist who has not his tongue in his pocket.
  • It is that part of a non- censored newspaper, only the Nigerian government does not allow freedom of speech .
  • Therefore he received threats before which he unfortunately does not yielded, and causing the death of his wife and endangering his family.
  • The situation faced by Solaja pushes Uncle Tunde , a great lawyer in the country to infinite resources to intervene.
  • The latter managed to convince Folarin to her daughter and her son , a boy of 10 years of passionate football, safe in England.
  • The Solaja are thus forced to pack their belongings and leave suddenly and secretly .
  • For this, they need help because they can not leave without blankets.
  • Then comes Mrs. Bankole , a Nigerian suspect and a woman, I must admit , despicable.
  • Sade and her younger brother Femi pose children Yemi and Ade and fly to London.
  • Once there , while they wait for their Uncle Dele Solaja after suffering a search that will lead to the destruction of luggage Sade by his mother, Dele does not show because it fails to get to the airport to pick them up.
  • Ms. Bankole abandons to Victoria Station and they must fend for themselves.
  • They have no money and no contact apart from their uncle who can not be found .
  • So they start to roam the streets in search of art school where Dele works .
  • They eventually get help and take the bus to the workplace of their uncle .
  • They ask Dr. Solaja but it is not at school.
  • At nightfall , they find refuge in a video but vandals attacking , scary brother and sister.
  • The owner surprised the thugs but takes young immigrants to vandals also .
  • Calls on the authorities .
  • The eleventh chapter opens with a flashback in which a police officer is violent with Mr Solaja .
  • Quickly, the flashback ends and the story continues with Sade and Femi at the video store .
  • Two police arrive and question them but fear of endangering her father , the young remain silent in the face to the police before revealing the half-truth .
  • Children are taken to the police .
  • New flashback , students were slaughtered and Folarin has pictures of the massacre publish that which led to his arrest .
  • A Robert appeared , the children go to a foster family.
  • Ms. Graham , the woman is remarkable.
  • She is very understanding and caring with Sade and Femi .
  • His son, Kevin, is not very friendly to newcomers but still shows his room boy.
  • Ms. Graham meanwhile shows Sade her new room she shares with her brother and she offers him a t -shirt.
  • The new chapter begins with Sade that bears his school bag .
  • She hears a car and tires squealing .
  • Suddenly, she sees her mother on the ground with outstretched hand and bloodied body .
  • That's when the girl wakes up from his nightmare screaming , waking her adoptive mother hurries to calm her.
  • The next day, Sade meets a woman of color in her new home : Jenny , a relatively nice social worker who will try to help children.
  • Jenny raises many questions and Sade responds with a mixture of truth and lies (we later learned that the teenager also has promised not to tell anyone anything until his father would not be safe in London) .
  • Once the social worker part , the children try to reach them by phone their native country but in vain.
  • Children end up in a refugee center , they will go to school, but they will be separated .
  • Sade is worried because she knows she will meet again and again to questions and she is also concerned because his little brother is not happy and made some crises.
  • Thereafter, they meet the Kings , another family from Jamaica.
  • They get along well and the Kings continue to do anything for the kids to go well .
  • On his first day , Sade meets several people but is aware that most are not very nice , especially Marcia scares Sade.
