- It is composed by numerous kinds of house called Trulli that contribute to integrate complete and enrich local landscape.
- Trulli are the most important attraction for tourists there.
- These buildings date back to 14th century when dwellings found out a new way to build houses.
- During these years, Alberobello area was under the power of king of Taranto.
- He dictated taxation to the local people in order to the occupancy of lands.
- Consequently the local poor people decided to build using an alternative method.
- They erected Trulli directly on the rocks, by using drystones without cement neither basis.
- In this way if there had been a royal inspection, Trulli could have been destroyed.
- The Trullo consists of a single building, but it could be connected to others.
- In general it was used for family life, in particular it was also used for animals.
- On the whole composed by a single room, the Trullo usually contained a little fire where dwellers cooked and beds were excavated in the wall and separated by curtains.
- Trulli are made of white drystones as usual, but its roofs consist of grey limestones and they have a conical shape.
- The roofs are topped by a particular stone which was considered a symbol of family builders.
- Moreover as in the 18th century world heritage commission allowed the restoring operations, some of family crests were lost.
- The site is also characterized by small and tortuous streets going up and down the hill.
- These are full of street vendors and souvenir shops, which perfectly blend with charming atmosphere.
- Therefore ALberobello have been designated as world heritage site because they are an example of human engine and prehistoric technique survived until now, as well as outstanding universal value.
