Reflexive Verbs[edit | edit source]

Reflexive verbs are a special type of verb in Ukrainian that indicate that the subject of the verb is also the object of the verb. In other words, the action of the verb is performed by the subject on itself. Reflexive verbs are commonly used in Ukrainian to express actions that involve oneself, such as getting dressed or washing one's hands. To form reflexive verbs in Ukrainian, the reflexive pronoun "себе" (sebe) is added to the verb.

For example:

  • Я мию руки. (Ya miyu ruky.) - I wash my hands.
  • Я мию себе. (Ya miyu sebe.) - I wash myself.

Here are some common reflexive verbs in Ukrainian:

Ukrainian Pronunciation English
одягатися od-yahatysya to get dressed
знайомитися zna-yo-mytysya to get acquainted
вмиватися vmee-va-tysya to wash oneself
голитися ho-ly-ty-sya to shave
прокидатися pro-ky-da-tysya to wake up
сміятися smee-ya-tysya to laugh
розумітися ro-zoo-mee-ty-sya to understand

Imperative Verbs[edit | edit source]

Imperative verbs are used to give commands or make requests in Ukrainian. They are formed by using the base form of the verb without any subject pronoun. The imperative form of the verb is used when addressing a single person or a group of people. The subject pronoun is often omitted in imperative sentences, as it is understood from the context.

For example:

  • Мов! (Mov!) - Speak!
  • Зачекай! (Za-che-kay!) - Wait!

Here are some common imperative verbs in Ukrainian:

Ukrainian Pronunciation English
розкажи roz-ka-zhi tell
почекай po-che-kay wait
зроби zro-by do
прийди priy-di come
послухай po-slu-hay listen
подивись po-dy-vys look
підійди pi-di-yd approach

Reflexive Imperative Verbs[edit | edit source]

In Ukrainian, reflexive imperative verbs are used to give commands or make requests in which the subject of the verb is also the object of the verb. These verbs are formed by combining the reflexive pronoun "себе" (sebe) with the base form of the verb.

For example:

  • Вмий себе! (Vmiy sebe!) - Wash yourself!
  • Одягни себе! (Odyahni sebe!) - Dress yourself!

Here are some common reflexive imperative verbs in Ukrainian:

Ukrainian Pronunciation English
помийтеся po-miy-te-sya wash yourselves
привітайтеся pri-vi-tai-te-sya greet each other
не смійтесь ne smee-ys don't laugh
посміхніться po-smikh-nit-sya smile
розслабтеся roz-sla-bte-sya relax
не хвилюйтесь ne khvi-lyu-yte-sya don't worry

Conclusion[edit | edit source]

In this lesson, you have learned how to form and use reflexive and imperative verbs in Ukrainian. Reflexive verbs indicate that the subject of the verb is also the object of the verb, while imperative verbs are used to give commands or make requests. Reflexive imperative verbs combine the reflexive pronoun "себе" (sebe) with the base form of the verb. Practice using these verbs in different contexts to improve your Ukrainian language skills.
