Introduction

In Welsh, there are several ways to talk about the future. In this lesson, you will learn how to use future verb forms and time expressions to discuss future events. Understanding how to talk about the future will help you express plans, hopes, and dreams for upcoming events.

Future Tense Verb Forms

The Simple Future

The simple future tense in Welsh is formed by using the verb "bydd" (will) followed by the infinitive form of the main verb. For example:

Welsh Pronunciation English
Byddaf i'n mynd BUH-dav ee'n MUND I will go
Byddi di'n gwneud BUH-di dee'n GNU-ayd You will do
Bydd e/ei/y'n dysgu BITH ay / BITH ay-ee / BITH un DIS-gee He / She / It will learn
Byddwn ni'n canu BUH-doon nee'n CAN-ee We will sing
Byddwch chi'n eistedd BUH-dookh chee'n AYS-tedd You will sit
Byddan nhw'n chwarae BUH-dan noo'n HWAR-ay They will play

The Future Perfect Tense

The future perfect tense in Welsh is formed by using the future tense of "cael" (to have) followed by the past participle of the main verb. For example:

Welsh Pronunciation English
Cawn ni wedi gorffen CAWN nee WEH-dee GOR-fen We will have finished
Byddwch chi wedi blino BUH-dookh chee WEH-dee BLEE-no You will have tired
Byddan nhw wedi cysgu BUH-dan noo WEH-dee KUSS-gee They will have slept

The Future Continuous Tense

The future continuous tense in Welsh is formed by using "bydd" (will) followed by "yn" and the present participle of the main verb. For example:

Welsh Pronunciation English
Bydda i'n siarad BUH-tha ee'n SHAR-ad I will be speaking
Byddwch chi'n cymryd BUH-dookh chee'n KUM-rid You will be taking
Bydd e'n mynd BITH en mund He will be going
Byddan nhw'n gwneud BUH-dan noo'n GNU-ayd They will be doing

Time Expressions

Tomorrow and Yesterday

In Welsh, "yfory" means "tomorrow," and "ddoe" means "yesterday." For example:

  • Mi fyddwn ni'n mynd i'r sinema yfory. (We will go to the cinema tomorrow.)
  • Ddoe, es i i'r swyddfa. (Yesterday, I went to the office.)

Next and Last

To talk about future or past events that are recurring, you can use "y nesaf" for "the next" and "yr un diwethaf" for "the last." For example:

  • Yr wythnos nesaf, byddai'r ganolfan hamdden yn cael ei hailagor. (Next week, the leisure center will be reopened.)
  • Yr un diwethaf, bûm i yn mynd i'r swyddfa. (Last time, I went to the office.)

Plans and Intentions

To express plans and intentions for the future, you can use "am" followed by the present participle of the verb. For example:

  • Rwy'n mynd am fynd ar wyliau wythnos nesaf. (I am planning to go on vacation next week.)
  • Dwi'n bwriadu prynu car newydd eleni. (I intend to buy a new car this year.)
