Somali Grammar - Adjectives

Hi Somali learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing adjectives in the Somali language. Adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns and pronouns. They can be used to give more information about a person, place, thing, or idea. We will look at how to form adjectives, as well as how to use them in sentences. By the end of this lesson, you should have a better understanding of adjectives in Somali.

Forming Adjectives

Adjectives in Somali are formed by adding suffixes to nouns. The most common suffixes are -san, -lay, and -le.

-san

The suffix -san is used to form adjectives from nouns. It is added to the end of the noun. For example:

  • Noun: qof (person)
  • Adjective: qofsan (person-like)

-lay

The suffix -lay is used to form adjectives from nouns. It is added to the end of the noun. For example:

  • Noun: guri (house)
  • Adjective: gurilay (house-like)

-le

The suffix -le is used to form adjectives from nouns. It is added to the end of the noun. For example:

  • Noun: magaalo (city)
  • Adjective: magaalole (city-like)

Using Adjectives

Adjectives can be used to give more information about a noun or pronoun. They can be placed before or after the noun or pronoun.

For example:

  • Qofsan waa qof (A person-like person is a person)
  • Waa qof qofsan (It is a person-like person)

Adjectives can also be used to compare two things.

For example:

  • Magaalole waa ka weyn magaalo kale (A city-like city is bigger than another city)
  • Magaalo kale waa ka yar magaalole (Another city is smaller than a city-like city)
