Sinhala Grammar - Future Tense

Hi Sinhala learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about the future tense in Sinhala. We will look at how to form sentences in the future tense and how to use them in everyday conversations.

The future tense is used to talk about events that will happen in the future. It is formed by adding the suffix දෙනෙකු (deneku) to the verb stem. The suffix දෙනෙකු (deneku) is added to the verb stem for all persons.

For example, the verb කියන්න (kiyanna) means "to say". To form the future tense of this verb, we add the suffix දෙනෙකු (deneku) to the verb stem කියන (kiyan). The future tense of කියන්න (kiyanna) is කියන්නදෙනෙකු (kiyannadeneku).

Here are some examples of sentences in the future tense:

Sinhala Pronunciation English Translation
මට පිටුවට යන්නදෙනෙකු maṭa piṭuvaṭa yan̆nadeneku I will go to the page
ඔයා කියන්නදෙනෙකු ōyā kiyannadeneku He/She will say
අප කියන්නදෙනෙකු āpa kiyannadeneku We will say
ඔබ කියන්නදෙනෙකු ōba kiyannadeneku You will say
ඔහු කියන්නදෙනෙකු ōhū kiyannadeneku They will say

The future tense can also be used to express probability or possibility. For example, ඔබ කියන්නදෙනෙකු (ōba kiyannadeneku) can be translated as "You might say".

To practice using the future tense, try making your own sentences. To improve your Sinhala Grammar, you can also use the Polyglot Club website. Find native speakers and ask them any questions!
