Origin of Russian days of the week
- Понедельник (Monday) - means "A day after
'недели'
".
This word
'неделя'
meant 'Sunday' in the old Russian (because it meant "a day without work"). Now it means "Sunday" in all other Slavic languages, except Russian. The modern Russian word'неделя'
= 'week'. In modern Russia, the week begins on Monday!
- Вторник (Tuesday) - means "second(day)".
- Среда (Wednesday) - means "midweek"
- Четверг (Thursday) - means "fourth(day)"
- Пятница (Friday) - means "fifth(day)"
- Суббота (Saturday) - came from a word meaning Sabbath
- Воскресенье (Sunday) - means "Resurrection (of Jesus)"
