As we continue learning Rundi, it's essential to understand how to talk about future events. In this lesson, you'll learn about the future tense and how to use it in sentences to describe actions that will happen in the future.

Future Tense

The future tense in Rundi indicates that an action will happen in the future. In Rundi, the future tense is formed by adding a prefix to the verb.

Forming the Future Tense

To form the future tense, you need to add the appropriate prefix to the verb stem, depending on the noun class of the subject. Here are the different prefixes you need to use, depending on the noun class:

Rundi Pronunciation English
n- [n-] 1/2 class singular
ta- [ta-] 1/2 class plural
shi- [ʃi-] 3/4 class singular
ti- [ti-] 3/4 class plural
a- [a-] 5/6 class singular
ta- [ta-] 5/6 class plural

Here's an example using the verb -gucika (to write) in the future tense with the 1/2 class singular prefix:

Ndagucika - I will write

Here's another example using the verb -gucika in the future tense with the 3/4 class singular prefix:

Ishigucika - She will write

Using the Future Tense in Sentences

Now that you know how to form the future tense in Rundi, let's practice using it in sentences. Here's an example sentence using the verb -kwandika (to read) in the future tense:

Ntakwandika umwanya wa muka - I will read my son's book

Here's another example sentence using the verb -gusoma (to study) in the future tense:

Tuzogusoma ibigarasha vy'Uburundi - We will study Burundi's history

Remember to use the appropriate prefix for the noun class of the subject when forming the future tense.

Negative Future

To form the negative future, add the negative prefix 'n-' before the appropriate prefix. Here are the different prefixes you need to use for the negative future tense, depending on the noun class:

n'shi- [n'ʃi-] 3/4 class singular
n'ti- [n'ti-] 3/4 class plural
n'a- [n'a-] 5/6 class singular
n'ta- [n'ta-] 5/6 class plural

Here's an example sentence using the verb -kwandika in the negative future tense with the 1/2 class plural prefix:

Ntakwanka - I will not write

Here's another example using the verb -gusoma in the negative future tense with the 3/4 class singular prefix:

Ntashigusoma - She will not study
