Modern Greek (1453-)Vocabulary → Politics and government

As we progress into advanced vocabulary, it is essential to understand political and government terminologies in Greece. In this lesson, we will dive deeper into the Greek political system and learn about the terms used in governmental affairs.

Greece's Political System

The current political system of Greece is a parliamentary representative democratic republic, with the President of the Republic serving as ceremonial head of state, and the Prime Minister being the head of government. The unicameral Hellenic Parliament (Βουλή των Ελλήνων) is the highest organ of the state's legislative branch, comprised of 300 members who are elected for a four-year term.

Political Parties in Greece

In Greece, several political parties operate despite the single-chamber parliament. Access and funding to run in election campaigns are available to all parties by democratic means. Currently, there are nine parliamentary parties in Greece.
